It's time to plan your vacation and you've decided to visit one of the most beautiful areas in Portugal, the south coast, specifically the Algarve ... Perfect choice. Now is the time to do your research and start looking for the best attractions in the Algarve.

In this post, we will recommend places that you cannot miss during your holidays in the Algarve. It is a Portuguese region that is full of contrasts: mountains and coast. In short, a perfect place for nature lovers.

The Algarve in Portugal has lots of beaches, viewpoints, coves, cliffs, caves ... and many other things that you can enjoy and are a must in the Algarve. They are undoubtedly places that will remain engraved on your retina.

Benagil Cave

There is no better way to start this blog about what to see in the Algarve, than talking about probably the most famous or well-known place in the entire Portuguese region: The Benagil Cave. It is a natural cave produced by the erosion of the sea, with characteristic holes that connect the cave with sky views. It is the perfect fusion of colors between its yellowish walls and the turquoise blue of the sea.

The Benagil Cave is a must in the Algarve, it is the picture of millions of postcards, due to its natural beauty. For years, the Benagil cave was one of the best hidden treasures in the Algarve, it was only known by local fishermen. Now with the tourism growth and the ease offered by new technologies to share images on social networks, it has become the most popular landscape.

The Benagil cave, can only be accessed by hiring an excursion. You can take a boat trip or if you are a true adventurer and you love experiences, our advice is to take the excursion by kayak or paddle surf from Benagil beach.

Church of San Lorenzo

If you are a religious art lover, you cannot miss a visit to the church of San Lorenzo in Almancil, Algarve. It is a baroque-style church built in the first half of the 18th century.

The external wall of the church of San Lorenzo looks totally pristine white, but it is really inside where its singular beauty awaits. Inside, both the ceilings and the walls are decorated with blue glazed tiles, typical from Portugal.

These painted tiles depict scenes from the life of San Lorenzo. This masterpiece was made by the famous artist of the time, Policarpio de Oliveira Bernarde.

It also has an impressive gilded woodcarving altarpiece in the main chapel. The church of San Lorenzo in Almancil is an essential in your holidays in the Algarve. This altarpiece was created by Manuel Martins, the most recognized carver in the Algarve.

Fiesa Portugal

If you are a family traveling with children, you might be wondering what to see in the Algarve with children. Then let's talk about Fiesa Portugal. It is a park in Lagoa and where the whole family will enjoy giant sand sculptures.

As we have mentioned before, Fiesa is an outdoor park where giant sand sculptures of different themes are exhibited by various talented artists. The Fiesa park contains more than 40,000 tons of sand under the sun with where you will enjoy with your family the live shows that the venue offers.

The entrance to Fiesa Sand City varies between € 6 and € 12, depending on the age of each visitor, except for children under 6 who have free admission.

Cape of San Vicente

We cannot finish the blog without recommending Cape San Vicente, where there is a medieval fortress with an amazing lighthouse, the Faro de San Vicente. This fortress protected the Portuguese coast from Pirates and Arabs.

But what really makes Cabo de San Vicente de Portugal an essential place to visit in the Algarve are its sunsets. Watching the sun go down until it disappears over the horizon of the Atlantic Ocean is an experience that you will never forget. You cannot miss the opportunity of visiting it during your stay in the Algarve.

Our advice when visiting Cabo de San Vicente is to go before sunset. Because it is a popular place and it is very crowded. So you can enjoy a good place and walk quietly around the surroundings discovering the San Vicente lighthouse and the different cliffs in the area.
